Karel Husa's "Evocations..." is a great piece. It runs about 15 minutes
for three movements in a Bartokian (??) kind of language. It uses only
traditional playing techniques, but it ain't easy! Whether it's "audience
friendly" will depend on the audience, and the quality of the performance.

Interesting story. Husa wrote "Evocations..." in 1951, and gave it to a
publisher, who sat on it and didn't actually publish it. In the 1960's
Husa got a commission for a piece for wind quintet and orchestra. He
"recycled" the music of "Evocations...". The Quintet version, Titled
"Serenade", was published by Leduc (IIRC). At that point, suddenly the
publisher who had "Evocations" decided that the time was right!

OOOPS!!

Both versions are good pieces, though I'm a little more partial to the
original.

If you decide to play it, have fun - great piece.
