Wow Lelia,

That is really cool! Often during the summers when I was a kid, my parents would drive my brother and me back east to visit my grandparents in Florida and Georgia and a number of other relatives in Illinois and elsewhere. I used to think that the cicadas were the neatest things. It has been a few years since I've been back there, but I seem to remember the ebb and flow of the cicada songs as being slower (i.e. each song lasts longer) and they would vary in length. Though, I'd always heard them tutti. I never tried to hear each individual call. From searching google for CICADA SONGS, I ran into the following and more:

I didn't realize that the cicada songs varied so much, apparently each is unique to a species, though I'm not surprised.

Living in Virginia, you undoubtedly have a better sense of the length of the songs than I do. And besides, I'm not trying to revoke your artistic license. ;^) If anyone should have one, I think you are certainly qualified.

Your piece also reminds me of a thunder storm imitation that we did in camp when I was in grade school. We'd beat on the floor of the wood frame building with our hands, feet and I think finger tips imitating the sounds of the rain drops splashing and thunder claps.

Thanks for sharing.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Jones
