Subj: [kl] New music for clarinet and cicadas (ad)
Date: Fri, 28 May 2004 14:21:16 -0400

I wrote this classroom participation piece for people with children in the
area of the northeastern USA who can hear a million cicadas per acre right
now....

Metamorphosis 2: 17-Year Cicadas

The online audio score (which you can listen to or print out free of
charge) shows a violin, but the extracted parts include the optional
substitution of Bb clarinet for the violin. The idea of the piece is to
let a group of young kids *be* the cicadas. At least four children (who
don't need any previous percussion experience) play wood blocks ad libitum,
accompanied by two experienced student drummers on wood blocks, along with
intermediate to advanced violin or clarinet, marimba and steel drums. I
left the score visible for the audio of the wood blocks, to give an idea of
how to produce the sound, but there's no extracted part for the wood
blocks. The kids should play them ad libitum (see the program notes), with
a teacher directing when to crescendo and when to fade to silence at the
end.
