Yesterday afternoon I went to a performance of the San Jose Wind
Symphony, mostly because my daughter plays percussion with the
group. It was a delightful afternoon exclusively consisting of
marches music for solo tuba, and brilliantly played by Patrick
Sheridan formerly with the U.S. Marine Band.
One of our Klarinet colleagues, Robert Yaeger, plays with the
group and it was nice to meet him again.
The bass clarinetist (who I think is Grant Green) owned three
instruments, all present for the concert. One was a standard low
E-flat bass clarinet, the second a wooden contrabass in E-flat,
and the third a LeBlanc contrabass in B-flat. I asked him if he
owned all three horns and he said that he did; i.e., they were
not owned by the wind symphony, which does not have any
instruments at all.
Except for the Wagner Huldigungsmarsch which I did not hear, the
concert was very pleasant. I even heard my old friend Percy
Grainger's Lads of Wamphray, and it has to be 50 years since I
heard it last. Also enjoyed Rossini's march for the Sultan Abdul
Medjid and the equisite Norwegian march, "Valdres."
My daughter played brilliantly, spectacularly, wonderfully,
amazingly, and I was able have my granddaughter by my side eating
ritz crackers (of which I swiped a couple).
