I did a Google search and received 239 hits for "Contemporary Record
Society". I didn't read all 239 hits from beginning to end, but I
didn't notice any mention of how large the awards are. One of the hits
gave a hint however:

http://www.nfaa.org/artprograms/astralwinners.html

As you can see, another organization donated money towards the cost of
the artist's making of a "Contemporary Recording Society" recording.
Although this doesn't prove anything, the implication, it seems to me,
is that this particular artist had to come up with cash in order to get
his (or her?) work recorded. The unanswered questions are "How much
money?" and "Does every winner need to come up with cash?"
