Mr. LaPorta was a wonderful man and musician; I spent time briefly at
Berklee and studied with him, and later as a student at New England
Conservatory played in a few performances that he directed at Berklee. He
was a positive, encouraging, and very open-minded individual. He wrote a
book of memoirs called "Playing It By Ear", published by Cadence Jazz
Books, and presumably still available through them
(www.cadencebuilding.com) in which he discusses his long and varied career
and experiences with a wide range of musicians, including Lennie Tristano,
Charles Mingus, Woody Herman, Igor Stravinsky, etc. He will be warmly
remembered and missed by many...
