The discoloration is most likely from the temperature of the vinegar or
rinse water. In my shop, I use a mixture of 1 part dish soap, 2 parts
vinegar, 4 parts water. I soak the mouthpeices for 15 minutes, and then
carefully use a very soft brush wrapped in t-shirt material to clean the
inside. Rinse with TEPID water. Water that is too hot or too cold might
turn your mouthpiece brown. If you have a plastic clarinet, you might want
to soak your barrel along with the mouthpiece.
