If only this WERE the philosophy in use! Each child SHOULD, as nearly as
possible consistent with budgetary limitations, receive the education that
is appropriate for THAT child's abilities. Instead, we have the belief
that every child is only entitled to EXACTLY THE SAME education, even if
that must be, of necessity, the education appropriate for the most
physically and mentally challenged child in the school. The only
reasonable way to achieve this is by grouping students of similar abilities
so each class can move forward at its own pace, but this is seen as
undemocratic by the educational poohbahs. As a result, the bright students
are held back and become bored and disinterested, while the slower students
struggle to keep up, destined by design to fail. BOTH groups get "left
behind" as a result, and the middle folks, caught in the crossfire between
the two, are not likely to thrive, either.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
