I am dismally behind in reading postings but I came across this (after
deleting about 30 messages from the same person.....) and wanted to point
out that many students with Asbergers have higher than average IQs and with
ability grouping would probably end up with peers of higher than average
intelligence. We do have evidence supporting the need for gifted students
to spend at least part of their time with similarly capable students.

I would also disagree with the perception that was voiced that the bulk of
resources were targeted towards the disabled and then the gifted. While
this may be the case in some localities it hasn't been my experience. What
I've generally seen is an educational experience for the gifted with a
little "icing" but not qualitatively different than what is being offered
to the rest of the school population. If it were then perhaps we wouldn't
have so many gifted individuals who become disengaged with our educational
system and drop out. It is a great loss that I don't believe can be laid
solely at the feet of the particular students or their parents.

My belief is that EVERY child is entitled to an appropriate education and
that every child can learn. It isn't easy- and ultimately won't be cheap
to achieve this.............
Take Care,
Anne
