Brian,

From working in the music store business, I can tell you that most of them
don't rent out such "odd" instruments as bass clarinets and Eb clarinets.
You'll be VERY lucky if you can find one...

Your best bet is to look into the closest university to you that has a music
school (Boston has a couple conservatories, don't they?) and contact the
Music Resources guy, or find out who loans out the school instruments. They
are all usually very nice when it comes to local musicians in need... maybe
they can help you out...

I've decided to take an audition for the first time in over a decade.
Unfortunately, I no longer live in a major metropolitan area, but way out
rural, and I no longer have people/institutions from which to borrow bass/Eb
instruments.

The only shop I know well (I live in the Northeast US) is Rayburn in Boston,
and they haven't returned my calls asking about renting these beasts. The
audition is close enough that with careful timing I could get instruments
from WWBW and return them, though that feels somewhat underhanded. I only
have enough credit to get good student-quality instruments, but the player
is the bigger concern :).

Any suggestions? Thanks.
