Hi Nick,

Well, first of all you don't want to be mean. In your situation something
must be done immediately or you face losing your program. the best way to
handle it is to be honest in a Band boosters meeting and tell the parents
what is going on. they will appreciate your honesty and hopefully if they're
decent people and will respect you as the director of the program. You do
need to calm down the harshness, if there is any.

Dr. Mike Robinson, Asst. Director of Bands at the University of South
florida, once told our wind ensemble that for 10 years he was a tyrant and
he thought that was how you got good bands. He learned such is not so. the
key to getting a great program is patience and high expectations. If you let
your kids know that you will be cool with them if they respect your strive
for excellence, you will have a great program without having to be the bad
guy.

In the meantime, the program you're stuck in sounds pretty bad- I'd suggest
searching for a better job in another school district. The last thing you
want in life is a horrible position where the parents think they know more
than you do--- that's why YOU spent 4+ years in college, and they didnt.

Good luck and please! e-mail me! I'm going into my student teaching in
august (elementary and High school) and I'm a bit freaked out! I also think
that musiceducator.org has a listserv, if it helps. :)
