I don't knock formulaic writing. It is a hallmark of a composer's style
and - vocabulary. (Look at Haydn. Many of his symphony movements are
interchangeable. But they still go somewhere. And the listener is happy
to be along for the ride.

Don't ask me to explain Ives. Sometimes he's good. Sometimes he's off the
wall. There is an Ives "sound"; but it is much less consistent than you or
I would like.

changed styles with every other composition. Besides, a formula
