Hmmm. This reminds me of this bad writing contest that takes place
every year. The object is to begin what you hope will be the worst
entry of all with the classic: "It was a dark and stormy night."

Now, to keep this true to bad writing AND bad description of clarinet
sound/playing, I submit this as a rather 'auspicious' beginning to an entry:

"It was a dark and stormy night...and the murky dark sound of the
rehearsing bassett horn trio wended its way through the cavernous
passages that snaked beneath Dan Leeson's study."
