Hey Patricia, ...

No apology is called for at all! I was making a remark on several levels ...

1. The level of (amateur) playing I've achieved, such as it is, was pretty
much without the benefit of piano (on which I had a year or so lessons about
55 years ago and never amounted to anything) or any systematic theory
teaching at all other than how to read music. Of course I have learned a
certain amount of theory since and it does inform my playing and especially
my conducting ... but I was making the point that perhaps the need for
piano/theory is not as *essential* as perhaps some were implying.

2. Do I think they are valuable parts of a musical education? Yes, of
course.

3. Do I think I could use more piano/theory now? Yes ...

4. When will I get round to it? Maybe in 10 years time or so ...

5. It is never too late to learn - keep me a slot free in a decade!
