Andy, the concise answer to your question is that different people, when
put to the test via actual experiment, do not agree on whether a
particular sample is dark or bright.
A common physical definition for "dark" is "reduced amplitude of the
higher partials"; but since human perception is influenced by more than
just the "low/high ratio", humans seldom agree when asked to identify
specific examples, especially when other dynamic and harmony details are
allowed to vary (as occurs in real music).
