Subj: RE: [kl] Questions on Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Date: Thu, 6 May 2004 16:32:01 -0400

Just to clear up a misunderstanding:

Walter originally wrote, as the first of his two questions:

> In the beginning of the Third Movement, the Elegia, Bartok has the clarinet
> alternate with the flute in wispy little 11 note figures. The part calls
> for Bb clarinet.
>
> The figures lie much better up a half step on the A clarinet. Previous
> clarinetists who have played this piece have even supplied a transposed
> part, written in Finale or some other notation program.
>
> Those of you who have been fortunate enough to play this piece, did you
> consider playing these measures on the A?

Karl Krelove then wrote about this first question:

> For what it's worth, the few times I've played it I've done it as written.
>
> [snip]
>
> Anyway, it isn't unplayable on Bb. And by the time you've played it 9
> times, you ought to have the hang of it. :-)

At the same time, Allen Levin wrote about the second question:
^^^^^^
> Opinion on 2nd question: Both measures are written as Bartok intended.
> The change has always seemed correct to me as a listener, so, as a player I
> play it. It appears that way in both of my scores.

He didn't even mention the first question.

Dan Leeson then wrote, about the first question:

> Allen's response to the question posed originally is very interesting and
> revealing.
>
> The original poster questioned the pitch of the clarinet of a passage in
> the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra solely because of his opinion that "it
> worked better on the other clarinet." Now Allen comes along as says that
> it seems OK to him.

What he meant to say was:

> Karl's response to the question posed originally is very interesting and
> revealing.
>
> The original poster questioned the pitch of the clarinet of a passage in
> the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra solely because of his opinion that "it
> worked better on the other clarinet." Now Karl comes along as says that it
> seems OK to him.

...because it was Karl who spoke about the first question, not Allen.
