Subj: RE: [kl] Questions on Bartok Concerto for Orchestra

O, Walter, what hast thou wro't?

For what it's worth, the few times I've played it I've done it as written.
There are signs that Bartok may have actually cared which clarinet you use.
For one, there are a couple more of those figures near the end that *are*
written for A clarinet, so perhaps he thought the timbral difference was
important. Also, the second movement is in A throughout until the last 10
bars. Either he thought (or someone told him) the very soft concert C there
would be easier to control or tune on a Bb (high d) than on an A (high Eb),
or he was consciously preparing the player to do the beginning of the Elegia
on Bb, indicating that he really meant for it to be played that way. Never
mind that you're playing those piano-pianissimo Ds on a cold clarinet.

Anyway, it isn't unplayable on Bb. And by the time you've played it 9 times,
you ought to have the hang of it. :-)

My 2 cents, FWIW,

Karl
