The bird he is representing is the Blackbird, basically the only bird he heard while in the concentration camp. There is an amazing book out entitled "For the End of Time; The Story of the Messiaen Quartet" by Rebecca Rischin that does a fantastic job dispelling some of the myths surrounding this piece as well as giving direct imput from the musicians that premiered the work. Great insight.
