I should clarify ....

This is a community orchestra of which I am a regular member. I haven't been
brought in just to play this part. Neither of the other two Bb/A players really
wants to play it. They both asked me if I would do it. There is one other
regular member of the section who handles the bass clarinet parts, but otherwise
the three of us figure out among ourselves who will play which parts and which
solos.

I agree with you about bringing players in specifically for this kind of thing.
As I said, not the case here.
