Michelle,

The best thing to do is get your name out there. Visit local schools
with band programs (even elementary) and leave a flyer with your name
that says you're giving lessons. Call and speak with the teachers and
let them know you're out there. Make some business cards and leave them
at the local music store to hand out. Networking is the key to building
a studio of your own. I'd also recommend looking into what band method
books the local schools are using because chances are you'll end up
having to work out of them and help your students with difficult
passages. You could give lessons at your house or offer to go to your
students' house, you could also be contracted to give lessons out of a
local music store if they do that. Look into it :)

Hi. My name is Michelle and I've been playing for about 19 years
(wow...can't believe that!), since I was in fourth grade. After college

(studied music education), I took some time off to get married and have
2
kids. Now they are 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 and I'm really missing the music in
my
life! I would like to start teaching lessons and get a private studio
of
sorts going, but am stuck in the getting started phase...does anyone
have
any advice for getting my name out at the area schools and finding
somewhere
to give these lessons? I'd really like to be able to offer lessons
starting
in June (summer lessons for the kids)...

Any advice would definately be appreciated! Also, I just found this
book by
Thomas Ridenour while searching for some things on the web, and want to
know
your thoughts on it...The Educator's Guide to the Clarinet...would it be
a
helpful one to get?

TIA,
Michelle
