Hm. It was 1975 or 1976 when I bought it, my band director having
recommended trying the E flat. I remember the salesperson out front
said the smallest clarinet made was the B flat, but the man in back room
gave me quite the lecture. He had one, he didn't use it much anymore,
it was an old wooden clarinet, he said, old enough that I wouldn't have
to worry too much about "proper" oiling. He went over care and
cleaning, and what a crack would look like, should one start. (He also
told me I wouldn't be able to play it very well and it could be returned
up to a year after purchase.) I was young, I wanted to do something
besides the whole notes of 3rd and/or 4th clarinet and so I believed
him. He could have been pulling my leg, I suppose.

Composite or wood? Well, I might need help on this one. It looks,
feels and smells like wood. There's grain (and texture to it) both
outside and inside the bore of the body. But inside the bell looks a
little different. Would composite mimic wood down to the texture? On
a student clarinet? What else should I look for?

Peace,
Martha E.
