One of my teachers used to say that there are times when everything sounds
great so you should put the instrument away, and then there are times when
everything sounds terrible and you should put the instrument away.

It isn't very often that this comes to bear, but it has merit. When you
can't find anything wrong with your playing, you are obviously not in the
mindset to practice right then. If you can find no good in your playing
then the same goes. Interesting circle.

When it comes to motivation for practice, I was always wanting to make the
top ensembles. That pushed me to get it done. now that I am out of school,
it is harder for me to make time for practice - especially the basics.

I'm glad that you sorted your problem. Keep it up!

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I realized the other day that my "slump"
was definitely just me getting frustrated with my playing. I think we all
have those days where we think we sound terrible and we can't seem to find a
way to overcome that icky sound. My "ickiness" was definitely from playing
with too much tension in my throat and tongue, which is always my biggest
problem. And a few days of not practicing enough (or the right way) makes
the problem much much worse. The way that I overcame this was having a
really good lesson where I figured out that I was playing with too much
tension and I changed it and now i sound a lot better and I'm playing more.
I guess we all have times like this.
Thanks again,
Tracy
