Deleigh says:

<<I was trained in the American system, which emphasizes overall performance
ability almost exclusively. I never knew about these exams, and neither did
anyone I know who ended up taking on music as a profession. I'd have liked
to have had more music theory in high school, but other than that I think
the American system works well>>

When I was in the Toledo Symphony, the musicians were frequently criticized
by the Music Director as being great "technicians" and lousy "musicians."

Our Music Director at the time had been raised and educated in France, where
he said most children were taught solfege from their earliest years. He
implied that we had all missed out on basic music training - sight singing, interval
recognition, matching pitch, correct rhythm - and really only knew how to
play our instruments.

At the time, of course, we were all very insulted.

Only later in life has it occurred to me how right he was in many of his
judgments.
