I am not sure if the grading system started with publishers, dealers, or
somewhere else.

Very roughly I think the grades are something like:
1 = first year of study
2 = second year study
3 = third year and perhaps longer especially if started young
4 = easier high school level
5 = more difficult high school level
6= difficult/professional level

I don't believe that solo music corresponds exactly to the ensemble
music. A very good high school band could successfully perform grade 5
music without most of the members being at a level to perform grade five solos.

It isn't unusual for Americans who decided to relocate to travel around the
US to find a new place to live. My parents did that after WWII and ended
up in Southern California (which isn't nearly as nice in many ways now as
it was then). I have some friends who did the same thing about 15 years
ago and ended up here in Las Vegas.

What kind of setting do you prefer, urban, suburban, or rural? You might
want to ask Keith Bowen about living in the US.
