School grades (years) in the US: 1-12

Music in the US is often graded 1-6 (with 6 being the most
difficult). There is no relation between the school grades and the music
grades.

From looking at the UK system, it appears that students get much more
theory than they usually do in the US.

I have the impression that many US high school clarinetists who have never
studied piano are behind where they should be when they start college.
Perhaps some of our US college professors could comment on this.
