Subject: [kl] Eepher Discovery
Just found something that works - thought I'd share it.
I play a lot of Eb in my wind ensemble. As I've posted before, I don't
use Eb reeds - I much prefer cut-down Vandoren V12s. (Indded, Greg
Smith suggested that his mouthpiece - which I adore - was designed just
that way).
As it happens, my orchestra is currently programming Huntley Beyer's
fourth symphony, which requires the first clarinet to play about 30
measures on soprano saxophone. Had to borrow one from a friend, as I
don't currently own one. Of course, I killed the only soprano reed I
had at the first rehearsal (death by mouthpiece cap, grrr).
Fortunately, I had my eepher with me, and don't you know it the cut-down
Bb reed worked OK to get through the rehearsal. A little stiff, but
worked.
Fast forward one week. Not to be left reedless again, I bought a box of
Vandoren Sop Sax reeds. Work better on the thing than a silly clarinet
thing cut down.
. . . and now the part that y'all might find disturbing. The soprano
sax reeds work really, really well on the eepher! The lay is shorter,
but they're still wide enough to over-cover the table. Nice and stable.
I'm sure that there a special level of purgatory reserved for me for
this.
