From what I know raising 3 kids, each playing 2 or more instruments:

There are state-wide solo & ensemble "competitions" in grades 7-12 in many
areas. They are not competitions per se, but a grade (I, II, or III) is
assigned by an adjudicator. Each year the requirements for the solo &
enselble are given, and they roughly follow the same levels as the ABRSM.
Performing in the S & E contests is not mandatory.

It's a bit more formal for piano; there are levels and tests assigned by the
National Federation of Music Clubs and I'm sure others.

Nothing like the system in the UK or Canada, though.

Music colleges/conservatories admit students via auditions; that could be
construed as "competitive entry".
