Subj: [kl] Music exams in U.S.

Could someone please advise me what the music examination system(s) is (are)
in the U.S. from beginning age (say 8 years old to 18 - when in UK a student
with grade 8 instrument AND theory is eligible for music college).
1) Does each state have different systems?
2) Are there alternatively, national institutions setting exams similar to
the 8 grades in UK? - namely: The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of
Music to name one of several.
3) And might there be different systems for different instruments - clarinet
and violin for example?
4) Or is there no system? In which case how does the student progress with
'markers' showing progress or otherwise.

I ask this, as several teachers here in UK seem to think that there is no
system in U.S. - only competitions. Are they right?

Thanks for your help
Tony W.
