Tonight was opening night for an original musical by high school
students. The director asked the backstage folks, which included
myself, to join the cast in their vocal warmup --- humming different
pitches, saying tongue twisters, grunting and laughing, etc. One part
of the exercise was to start a note and hold it as long as possible.
For some reason (?), the choral director encouraged the kids to use
their chests to take a deep breath without mentioning use of the
diaphragm. I outlasted all the kids, and I saw question marks on a few
of their faces.... "What does that geezer have that we don't?"

So there's one more reason to play a wind instrument......
