Hello, Kelly and Klarinet List.

Once again I am weeks behind in reading, storing
and answering E-Mails.

It is correct: of all the people who are Nominated
for a Pulitzer Prize, they ONLY list the few that were
considered to be "Runners Up", or like a "Second
Place" type of status. All other Nominees are
NEVER listed, which is about 100 to 200 people
each year. (I know, because I called them and asked.)
This hasn't stopped a long list of composers, authors,
etc., from listing that they truly were Nominated, so I
was asked by other musicians and composers, WHY
shouldn't I do the same?!?!

To verify that I really was Nominated for a Pulitzer
Prize by Dr. Carolyn Waters Broe, the Violist, Com-
poser, who is the Conductor of the "Four Seasons
Chamber String Orchestra" for about 12 years, I
welcome you, (and anyone) to contact her, or the other
Soloists of our 9-11 Tribute Concert CD. (It was
recorded live on September 6, 2003, and included 5 of
my works, of which 4 were Konzertst=FCcke, with
soloists on Viola, Trumpet and Horn).

Bear Woodson's Nominated Works:
"In Memoriam for the Fallen Victims of the
September 11, 2001, Attack", (July 2002, 7 min.)
being a 6-Voiced Double Fugue for Solo Horn
and Strings; and=20
"Fanfare for the Fallen Heroes of the September
11, 2001, Attack", (August 2002, 8 1/2 min.)
being a 4-Voiced Double Fugue for String
Orchestra.=20

I suppose any Schlemihl could nominate them-
self for a Pulitzer for doing any mediocre thing; but
as far as all our research can find, I am the First
Person in Music History to write TWO Double
Fugue Works to commemorate an historic event, (in
this case, it was the tragedy of the 9-11 Attack). How
many people can you find, who have done a similar
First-Time-Ever Event in Music History? I welcome
anyone to help do research to confirm, or disprove,
the rarity of this fact.

I've also been told by many sources, that too
often, the Pulitzer Prize is given to people, who
have already won a lot of money and fame, and is
often used as a "Lifetime Achievement" Award. Dr.
Shulamit Ran said that after winning one Pulitzer
for her Symphony, she nearly won a second one
for "Legends", which we studied when she came to
lecture us about it (around 1995), when I was
taking my Master's at ASU, (Arizona State
University).=20

I also think Dr. Chinary Ung tried out for a
Pulitzer for his "Inner Voices", but didn't get it. (I
studied with him at ASU on my Master's.) Even so,
he has won a stack of major awards over the years,
as had Dr. Ran, before she won her Pulitzer.

I won't live to see the day, that I get one in my
lifetime, but I haven't done too badly by being
worthy of being nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in
Music, in less than a decade of returning to
composing heavily. But I still have a lot of work
ahead of me, including work on my "Quintet for
Clarinet with Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass" (half-
way done), and the Clarinet Concerto (about half-
way through the first movement).
