"Loveless Love" was written in 1921; rayon was developed in 1910, acetate in
1924, so it's possible the reference was to rayon, but I think unlikely. The
same with soy milk. Though it's been around in other countries for quite
some time, it was only advertised in the US in the mid 4th quarter of the
20th century.

Adulteration normally doesn't apply to substances which are above-board
replacements, but substitution of (sometimes not so innocuous) the real item
with a cheaper product without telling the consumer.

Think sawdust mixed with flour ...
