Just thought I'd throw out this topic for discussion...

What do you all think about international music competitions that don't have
an international panel?

I'm bringing it up because I was kinda disturbed that in two of my most
recent challenges, there was only, like, 1 or 2 judges; and in reviewing my
comments, it became apparent that those judges voted against me for concerns
that my playing style was "too European" (whatever that meant).

I know we all have classic, "stereotypical" styles in different parts of the
world for clarinet and everything, but I thought that was a rather thick
comment to make at a so-called "international" competition. And you all know
that since these things are subjective, a comment like that makes a world of
difference as to placing in the finals or not even advancing from
quarterfinals... especially when there're no checks and balances from a
1-judge jury.

Any thoughts?

Bryan
