A bassoonist by the name of Mordechai Rechtman told me that the original
bassoon notes had pauses over each of the notes in question.
The idea was to emphasize the notes and not rush over them. Later
conductors thought that a bass clarinet could give more continuity to the
phrase.
Most likely the original is what the composer wanted. AG
