Audrey -

Back to my wild idea that everyone's education would be greatly enhanced if
piano study were required in grades 1 thru 3. Math concepts would be much
easier to comprehend for the students, self-discipline would be learned and
self-esteem would be improved because the student could learn to perform at
least some easy music that he or she was doing his or herself.

On the subject of self-esteem, when our younger daughter was studying visual
arts at Cooper Union in New York, she volunteered to teach art to a class of
delinquents who had a choice of these rehabilitative classes or go to
Juvenile Hall or worse.

Towards the end of the semester, a rather belligerent student brought his
completed artwork to show her. It was rather good and he seemed to be quite
proud of it. He said, "You know, this is the first thing that I ever made
by myself."

Self-accomplishment is really the only thing that builds self-esteem.

If these delinquents had studied piano (or some other musical instrument) in
their early education, perhaps they would not have been on the road to a
life of crime. (I wonder how her students turned out. How many are dead,
in prison or how many were able to make something of themselves?)

Regards,

Gene N.

Very interesting. For some reason, the last few days I've been seeing
pictures of British Columbia's 10 Most Wanted in our newspapers ansd
thinking, as I looked at them, "I bet none of them went through a really
good band program in school". Too bad. I'm convinced that good music
programs help make good citizens. Thoughts?
