I for one have been glad to read the first-hand
Brannen accounts. I would caution anyone thinking of
responding to an ad in the International Musician from
someone with a long list of wind instruments for sale
and an Arizona area code to think twice; no real
knowledge (ie. of what is a low C bass clarinet!) and
terrible attitude to customer service. Caveat
emptor...
On a practical note with the Tchaik, I've always
wondered (seeing Dave Bourque play those notes
unbelievably softly with the Toronto Symphony) what
does the bass clarinetist do for a part, just play
from memory, and play some of the 2nd part down an
octave to warm up to pitch beforehand? I don't
remember if Dave played anything else in the piece but
I would be worried about pitch sitting there until the
entry.
I remember a very funny article of Paul Harvey's in
the Clarinet some years ago when he was recounting
some of his favourite musical "disasters". He told of
a young 2nd bassoonist on tour with an English
orchestra who didn't see the bass clarinetist come
onstage on the other side of the row, and thought the
1st bassoon was unawares too. So, deciding to
heroically save the day, he came in too loud and about
a 1/4 step too flat in quasi-unison with the bass
clarinet! I can just imagine the rest of the wind
section trying to keep from bursting out with
laughter!
Live and learn I suppose,
