We just did Tchaikovsky 6 on our last cycle. I played 2nd clarinet for
the symphony and was asked to have my bass clarinet ready for that section
(rather than having another player come in). There is plenty of time to
make the switch, but some of the harmony is lost in the following section
while the switch is made back again. I wasn't ready to play Bb again
until the theme was stated for a second time.

Both the director, as well as the guest conductor (who happened to be from
Turkey) requested it to be played on bass.
