Perhaps it's the bulge, not the overall wall thickness, that makes the
difference --- if a difference truly exists.

I bought a lathe a while ago, and I'm in the process of making a few
barrels for myself. (with a *lot* to learn about machining, this is
the first time in my life that I've been within 5 ft of a lathe)

It happens that I started out with material whose diameter is much too
large. Thus I'll have an opportunity to begin with two "very fat"
barrels that sound (to my ear) identical because I made them as
identical as possible. Then I'll be able to leave one barrel's O.D.
alone (basically a cylinder) while I cut the other barrel's O.D. into a
"bulge". Finally I'll be able to form my personal opinion whether
there's any difference between the two of them.

(I thought about setting up my computer to make audio spectrum graphs,
but.... my budget and my desires do have their limits. Maybe some
other day.)
