It is not, not even close. I'm sure the shape evolved in order to allow more
wood around the lower, larger tenon socket, to help reduce cracking.

I have made both "fat" and "skinny" barrels. I doubt if 1 out of 100 of us
could hear any difference between them at 30 feet. However, I can tell you as a
player, I like the "feel" of a barrel with more mass/material in it.
