Subj: [kl] NERV convention II
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 2004 17:49:37 -0500

Yesterday I mailed you about the first evening and first full day of the
NERV convention in Utrecht. Today was different in schedule, but also a very
beautiful, and also a very long day. I am not going to give you all the
details: I wanna go to bed, but now memories still are warm and I want to
share them with you.

Because today at five the absolute top of the event occurred: the Emiliano
Clarinet Quartett played. These fout still young people make an ensemble I
think unique in the world. Not in the composition of the quartett: as the
name says, it is a clarine quartett. But it has set new standards in my
opinion in the art of ensemble playing. All four must be virtuososto lay
such dificult pieces as the "Six pièces d'audition" by J.M. Defaye so
perfectly. But showing off their virtuosity is not there aim, virtuosity
serves their playing. The piece is on their first cd: "ac temporum memoria".
I knew of course the program, thus I played it several times before the
convention started. But thisexecution was so much better, had gained such an
insigt, I almost didn't recognize the ensemble as the same one. And not only
in this piece precision, balance and all these other things that make
listening to music such a pleasure, were there. Most of all, however the
evoked the feeling of really enjoiing there job as pro clarinettists playing
these sometimes deceivingly simplysounding pieces. Being this weekend with
this very well-organised convention makes me a happy person, having heard
this quartett however was a highlight in my existence!

And then of course, more or less as a joke, was the Convention Bassclarinet
Choir. We played clarinet choir music, of course, but only on claribass,
alto clarinet, and even there was one contraclaribass!

An important happening of this weekend is the birth of the World
Bassclarinet Association. Actually one of the activities it will undertake
has already begun: Because in 1955 Joseph Horak gave the first claribass
recital ever in history, Henri Bok has already undertaken steps to organise
a claribass convention in October 2005, but it will now be held under
auspices of the WBA. If you want more information about the WBA and its aims
and goals you can mail to John de Beer:
