All humor aside, the idea of spending $1000-$2000 without renting first
and sampling a variety of instruments first has always amazed me.
My own feeling is that a novice should be encouraged, almost to the
point of absolute insistence, to experiment with **mouthpieces** first
--- partly because it's the least expensive way to begin learning how to
evaluate the equipment's tone/resistance/intonation/etc despite the fact
that your own embouchure/breath support/etc changes from day to day, and
partly because novices tend to make the move to a better instrument too
soon anyway and therefore any delay is a good thing. FWIW.
