I definitely attribute it to the cornet. And to what Bill said about it.

While his ear is very good, most of the recordings and concerts he hears
feature trumpet, you rarely hear a cornet any more. But a certain
semblance of brass tone quality (as any instrument's tone quality, for that
matter) comes from listening to experts play. His teacher actually does not
play much, he has a hiatal hernia, but the man teaches well. And Bug gets
exposed to a lot of players, since we are musicians. There is a cornet band
from England coming to our area next month, which he is excited about.

Our band director in high school used to use both - he had a cornet section,
and a trumpet section - a lot of the band music was written for both and had
totally different parts. I always thought it was normal, until I saw every
other band stacked with trumpets. No matter, ours was always better
musically :)
