Subj: [kl] Intonation help for HS players

Dear Friends,

Last week I installed the ensemble version of Tuneup on a High School music program. The principal clarinetist was a really marvelous player, but really struggled to "bend" the notes far enough to be in tune. Obviously, the major 3rds and 6ths were really difficult (Key of Bb). The rest of the players seemed to struggle even more.

Is there a particular method of teaching younger students technique specific to the clarinet? I am aware of many that offer alternate fingering methods, but I am most concerned with "introducing" the player to the concept of managing pitch issues. Tuneup is quite effective at exposing the problem, but even many teachers I know do not know how to solve them.

Thanks for your help.

Steve
