Nick,

I have measured the bore of my Fritz Wurlitzer bass in german system till
low C from 1964: 19,4 mm. Sound is small, focussed and very sonore. I love
it very much.
As Glenn said also in Holland quite a lot of players are switching to the
boehm bass (Selmer or Buffet), maybe also due to the very high prices for
the german system (Oehler or reform-boehm). Also the firm Johanna Kronthaler
offers recently a bass clarinet till low C in german system but with a wider
(boehm) bore.
See www.kronthaler-klarinetten.de. (German language)

Hi Nick,
I agree that the narrow bore instruments tend to carry well. I enjoy the
sound more too. As Alan once put it, it sounds more like a clarinet. That
much more of a pity that more and more German orchestra players are starting
to use Boehm bass clarinets (mainly Selmer). Another strange thing is the so
called bel canto bass clarinet which has a "Boehm bore" and German system
fingering. That seems to me to be the worst of both worlds.
