Subj: [kl] German bass clarinet bore

Some days ago, someone suggested that the mouthpieces used on German bass
clarinets were different because the bore was smaller. Walter G. even
mentioned that someone was playing a German instrument with an alto
clarinet mouthpiece - and the bore of an alto is quite a bit smaller.
I own an old Kohlert bass which measures between 22.6 and 23 mm (0.890 and
0.906 inches) at the bottom of the upper joint - it's not quite round any
more. When I compare this to the listed bores for bass clarinets currently
on sale, the smallest is 23.2 mm (0.913 inches) [two Amati's], the largest
is 25.1 mm (0.988 inches) [Selmer Mod. 40] and the average of 15 listed
bores is 23.9 mm (0.940 inches). (No bores listed for Buffet in this
catalog.) So my Kohlert is smaller than any listed horn, and about 1.1
mm (0.041 inch) smaller than the average catalog horn.

Since this instrument, although Boehm, is of German make, I am now
wondering what the bore of the present German bass clarinets might
be. Anyone know?
George
