Donna, It's just my own theory but I believe that the "rise" in autism
cases has more to do with the fact that the financial assistance =
programs
are much more plentiful and substantial for those with autism. My son =
has
bipolar disorder and the resources for mental illness are gravely =
lacking.
However, he has been described as "Asperger-like" since he also has a =
rather
high IQ and some of the traits. I know that I could probably get some
professional to diagnose him and then we could get all kinds of =
services. I
truly believe THIS is a BIG reason we have seen such a rise in "autism"
cases. I know parents of many kids with bipolar disorder who have =
pushed
for an Asperger's diagnosis. It seems no one cares if your child has a
mental illness but autism draws all kinds of sympathy.

"Well, Asperger's was only recognized by the medical profession about a
dozen
years ago. This huge increase is likely due in large part to more =
awareness
of
what Asperger's and autism are, and allows kids to receive a diagnosis =
who
in
previous years would have just been labeled as "dumb" or "weird
