Today is National Internet2 Day. The Internet2 is a high-bandwidth network
available only to educational institutions, which bypasses the high
traffic commodity Internet we all know and love.

At 3pm EST today, The Jazz Ensemble of the Manhattan School of Music will
be running a live webcast of a concert from Low Library at Columbia
University. If you are on a .edu network, you can watch the high bandwidth
stream, and if you are on the commodity Internet, you will be able to view
a lower bandwidth version.

There was talk on this list recently about having performances and maybe
even master classes conducted live via the web. With Internet2, this is
actually feasible. The New World Symphony has held auditions at the MSM
via Internet2; the delays on the feeds are measured in milliseconds, so
it's virtually real-time.

While I'm not sure if there will be clarinets in the performance, this is
great opportunity to see what the Internet is really capable of doing. I
happen to know the guy who runs the Internet2 stuff for Columbia, since we
work in the same department, and he would love to have more content to
send to the world. If there are any performers/instructors on this list
who have access to Internet2 (talk to your IT people), we'd love to help
faciliate master classes and whatnot. Please contact me off-list and we'll
see what we can organize.
