Usually the child *dictates* what the level is, and the school then has to
accomodate it.

By the same token, I don't think I'd let my son "decide" anything about his
education. If I had, he would still be in the same dumbed down math class
they put him in at the beginning of this year. They dumped him in the 4th
grade math group, even tho he can do math on a 5th grade level - this way,
they wouldn't have to do extra work to help him keep up. I fought and it
took 3 months to get that changed, but he gets Bs on 5th grade level math.
I told him that was worth a lot more than an A in 4th, and now he likes it.
He's not bored in class.

And then again....If it were up to him, he'd do Recess all day long ;)
