That guy was obviously insane or on drugs! If we REALLY want to not leave
any child behind, the focus MUST be on reading. No child should leave the
4th grade being unable to read. If children cannot read, they are
dependent upon the teacher's presentations for EVERYTHING they must learn
in school. Frankly, there is WAY TOO MUCH to cover and not nearly enough
time for that. A person who can read can learn practically anything he or
she wants simply by getting a book, or searching the internet.

It makes no more sense to attempt to teach music and say that it is
unimportant to be able to read music. Sure, there have been a few famous
people who have made it big in the music business without being able to
read music (current pop "musicians" don't count), but it has always been
more of a limiting factor than a reason for their success.
