Reminds me of a local school issue here in Richardson, Tx a few years ago.

Each one of the four high schools were installing a million dollar
"artificial" track. This to circle their already existing 2.5 million dollar
artificial turf football fields. EACH of the four high schools (only a few
miles apart) we going to get their own track.
Shortly following the start of the projects the school district announced
that it was going to eliminate most of the "lifetime" oriented sports
programs. i.e. tennis, golf, track, swimming, etc.
Both parents and teachers went after the board with fire in their eyes and
saved the day.

I don't see the fire in the parents supporting the music/arts programs right
now.
