I suppose you are talking about reed stiffness (or hardness) instead of
thickness. I've used #4 reeds (Vandoren) and find them (with the combination
of an M13 mouthpiece and the right ligature) to be the best for the clarion
and altissimo registers.

Wish u well and maybe you will move to 1st chair before the end of school
